TreeCastle

Don't worry. We'll live in the sky, where no one can hurt us. We'll stay until the woods fade and the leaves wither. By then it will be time to go home where they will have missed us so.

So, this was kind of a disaster from the beginning, so trying to resurrect it from the dead took foreverrrr. But now it's up, and ready for feedback.

By the way, for those of you who don't know me, I'm Lane Ngo. I'd like be an Uncarved Block. It's a Daoist term for being a jack of all trades, and being able to carve yourself into many different shapes multiple times, instead of being just one shape and only useful for one thing. So I want to animate, illustrate, and look into motion media. Oh, and as long as the story is told right and it is visually stunning, there is nothing wrong with a happy ending.

  1. I really like the movement in this piece from the house to the girls to the bridge to the house again. Your wonky tree-house building is fun too!

One thing that might increase the spontaneity of the house would be making the branches that are emerging from the roof be different sizes or add some more branches to fill out the tree.

  2. Thanks, Steven! I was having a bit of trouble with those trees, especially what to do with the leaves, since they were a background element and i didn't want them to stand out to much...but oak trees do have tons of branches, and that could make the piece a lot more fun. i almost feel like i could crop the piece in a half and achieve two better illustrations than one. lol

  3. I really like it Lane. It has some really nice personality. However, I have to agree with Steven that there are problems with the branches. To me it seems like you just need more branches in general, and I think then you'll be able to achieve variety naturally. Where they are holding each other's hands seems odd to me, it just doesn't look like they'd be holding each other at all in this context, and considering their body language. Also, the reason why you feel like they would look better as two cropped pieces, is because there is a compositional error. Because the red head is pointing to the left, it leads our eyes diagonally off the page, creating a disconnect between foreground and background. The fact that the bridge is leading off the page doesn't help either. I think your composition would have been stronger if you'd placed the tree on the far left, and then have it sway to the right and have the bridge cross to the right as well.
